It’s been a difficult few months. I find myself struggling with anxiety and all those ‘what-if’ questions. It’s easy for us to get distracted and overwhelmed by self-doubt. We lose perspective and can get caught in a fret frenzy of racing thoughts.

Anxiety is normal
Everyone feels anxious sometimes. It can even be helpful when it lets us identify something dangerous we should avoid. But anxiety becomes a problem when it starts to affect how we function in life and our relationships.
Think of having a security system in your house. You set it when you leave or are heading to bed. The alarm will go off if someone tries to break in but not when your neighbor takes her dog for a walk or you get up for a drink in the middle of the night. But what if your house alarm starts blaring not only when a burglar is at the window but when you’re not actually in danger? This is what it’s like for those who live with anxiety. You find your natural ‘warning system’ going into overdrive and creating all these false alarms. And then you start to doubt yourself, your situation, and worry what your anxiety might say about your faith.
Choosing a new path
One of the things I turn to when I’m feeling anxious is positive Christian affirmations. God can heal our anxiety but we are also an active participant. We can start letting go of our anxiety by choosing new ways of thinking and relating.
What are Christian affirmations?
Affirmations are positive and inspirational messages. They are short statements which we recite, sometimes daily or when ever we need a reminder, to help us change our mindset and point of view.
Our thoughts influence our choices, actions, relationships and our faith. Using christian affirmations from the bible can be a powerful way to open our hearts to God’s presence and promises when we’re going through a difficult time.
How do Christian Affirmations work?
Affirmations inspire us to a different way of living and help us focus on what’s important to us.
Studies show they can lower stress, build confidence, increase our performance at work and school, and even boost our problem solving skills. They help us overcome anxiety by interrupting the ‘worry loop’ and purposefully focusing on inspirational thoughts instead.
Neurologically, researchers have found reciting positive affirmations actually ‘rewires our brain’ by creating new neural pathways that promote positive thinking. These new patterns slowly replace those ‘old’ pathways that had us stuck in the negative thinking rut. I believe these changes become even more powerful when we intentionally engage God’s Word and create affirmations from scripture.

How to create your own Positive Christian Affirmations
1. Choose a bible verse that’s personal
As you’re reading the bible or looking through the concordance, highlight those passages that speak to you. Select a scripture verse that relates to something you’re struggling with or connects with your spiritual goals. For example, “I want to worry less and trust the plan God has for me.”
2. Write your affirmations in the first person
Phrasing the biblical message in first person “I” statements gently reminds us that God can speak directly to us through His Word.
3. Create a positive and transformational statement
Always use positive language. Don’t focus on what you ‘don’t want’. Envision the type of person, values, and actions you want to realize as you grow in faith and relationship.
4. Be specific
Affirmations should be small and attainable changes you can make in your spiritual life.
5. Believe it
Be true to yourself and explore your beliefs. I think it’s important to continuously challenge ourselves to go deeper while remaining honest and authentic.
